The fabric is purple or red (during Holy Week) or black (on Good Friday). It is translucent. It's not that we can't see Jesus; we just have to focus and look a little harder. That's sort of what Lent is all about. Lent is the only church season where the images of Jesus and the crosses are veiled. We wouldn't veil the priest unless he was glowing (like Moses).
